Mock-up
Motivation
We chose to make a model of the Auschwitz concentration camp to create a larger picture of the project for the participant team, but also with a didactic purpose, to help the history teachers introduce their students to an imaginary framework more attractive and closer to reality. Very often, we are guided to get an idea on our own about the place where at least 1,1 billion people were killed, from which 90% were Jews, while receiving a lot of information about the events that happened there, so then the 'landscape' becomes a blurry background. As long as the students can see a model of the concentration camp, then teaching would be easier, but it would also facilitate the students` insight.
The concept of such a model came when we were searching ideas of activities for the project that could be useful for the students and, first of all, for the promoting campaign. We have never heard before about a model of a concentration camp and it didn't seem hard to do, considering that we haven't made any models so far. Our first impression changed when we met with our art teacher, Petru Padurariu, who explained to us not only how complicated the procedure was, but also the purchase of materials. In the weekend, we met for a first attempt: me, Anca Spinu, Andreea Alexandroaia, Ana Spataru and Teodor Iacob. The materials we used were of poor quality and the first strategy of cutting the cardboard requested a lot of time. For our second meeting, when Madalina Rusu and Daria Soltanei also were present, time had been streamlined, but still the buildings weren't resistant enough. After we took every building to the art teacher for a checkup, he advised us to rebuild the barracks to increase the resistance. After a short time, at the next meeting with the teacher, he was finally satisfied and the model was almost ready after the pre-established criteria. We started painting the buildings the same day and all the pieces were put together on another day, at my home, for the final pictures.
Even if making the model requested a lot of patience and creativity on our part, we had a nice time together and we hope to exploit it furthermore in the campaign part or as a didactic component in classes with the support of our history teachers.
